1911 — Robert Borden takes office as Canada’s 8th Prime Minister and its 20th President of the Privy Council. The latter portfolio is a common one for leaders to take on. Five of the previous seven PMs also served as Privy Council Presidents (although Tupper’s stint did not occur while he was leader).
Another common practice is the requirement for cabinet ministers to seek re-election after being appointed. Seventeen members of the Borden cabinet are re-elected by acclamation in by-elections on October 27. Only Sir James Lougheed of the Senate doesn’t need to go back to the polls.
